2004-05 Top 250 Law Firms Web Site Awards

Firm Name Design Content Usability Interactivity Intangibles Total

Anytime the home page features the lobby, I know that amateur designers were at work. The flash timeline below it was unique the first 20 times or so I saw it --on web sites over the years. The site download time was among the worst in the lot…super slo-mo. The attorney bio section offers up bios alphabetically or by alphabet. More choices! On the plus side, the site is better than it was. It just lacked originality and was just a little too programmed. It gets tiring seeing the same look, feel and organization on so many sites. Having just looked at Calfee’s site, the contrast stands out even more.
Wilmer Cutler 2 4 3 3 3 15
The copyright year on the privacy policy is 1998. That should say it all. The content is improved. Pretend this is your lobby and spend a few bucks on appearances. Wilmer is a great firm without a great web site. This review pre-dated the Hale & Dorr merger.
Bell Boyd 3 4 2 3 2 14
Unlike Lathrop Gage, where the unique look still has some gas left in the tank, this version of bellboyd.com lost its charm a long time ago. The concepts and components are old and outdated, like the corduroy suit that still sits in my closet. When am I really going to wear that thing again? Another year without progress. I could not navigate through this thing with Chris Columbus by my side, and a super-powered compass. And the guest book? Please. Chicago has seen some nice new sites in the last year. Join the club.
Chapman and Cutler 3 3 3 3 2 14
Law firm web sites come in many flavors and brands. You get a few Haagen-Dazs and Ben & Jerry’s, a couple of Breyers and Edy’s, and a lot of Turkey Hill and Healthy Choice. Let’s call this site store-brand vanilla.
Kramer Levin 3 4 2 3 2 14
It is not just that the site is the same one I hated last year, but combined with the tremendous growth and improvements of sites nationally (and especially in NYC), it is simply not the ideal resource you hope to see. Firms out of NY that “got it” this year (Kelley Drye comes to mind) make it stick out even more. Difficult structure, no searching, blah, blah, blah…
Lewis Brisbois 4 3 3 2 2 14
First of all, when I went to the previous domain name (lewisbrisbois.com), the link was dead. I thought the firm had folded. You point the domain to the new site! And could you get any more generic legal clip art? The site looks better than it is. It is lacking in content. I assume you do not have a summer associate program. This is the thinnest “careers” section I’ve ever seen. This is a brochure with bios. Expectations are much higher for Top 100 law firms. Forget about my clip art comment and just focus on getting the content of this site up to snuff. The home page is the highlight.
McCarter & English 3 3 3 2 3 14
While IMA knows that a new McCarter site is on the horizon, at review time, the current site is still in place. Still with a splash page? Very little depth of content and resources. Some of the most flagrant “scrolling” pages still out there. Simply put. The web, for business development, was clearly not a priority.
Plunkett & Cooney 3 4 3 2 2 14
Same site, different year. Collage look? Still hate it. Frames? What do you think? The newsfeed page either was not working or was defunct. Do not suggest people e-mail you to subscribe to the newsletters. Give them an online form, for goodness sake! Call the Vet. Time to put this site out of its misery.
Squire Sanders 3 3 3 3 2 14
Maybe it is just bad timing—having just reviewed excellent new sites from Cleary Gottlieb and Fulbright & Jaworski, but this is a sleepy effort. The home page is a snoozer. To repeat some of last year’s comments…Clearly not a firm priority. Skimpy. Dull. Lifeless. Lacking depth. Otherwise, loved it! WILL ALWAYS LOVE…the solid attorney bio section.
Wachtell Lipton 5 2 3 2 2 14
One of the amazing things about this web site is how hard it is to find. An MSN search for “Wachtell Lipton” did not bring it up at all. On Google, it was there, but not too visible. Of course, that may have something to do with the site’s failure to have the most elementary of metatagging completed. Just look at the “title” – no firm name. But to quote Mr. Wachtell James Lipton himself (I’m making this up…), “Web. Schmeb.” Last time I looked, they were still doing quite well without the Internet.
